Microsoft Hits Pause on Xbox Handheld Development
Recent reports indicate that Microsoft has decided to halt its plans for a dedicated Xbox handheld device. According to Windows Central, the company is shifting its focus away from creating a proprietary gaming console.
Shifting Priorities in Gaming Hardware
This change comes as Microsoft reassesses its strategy in the gaming market. While there are still intentions to develop an Xbox handheld, it will not be released alongside the next-generation Xbox hardware, which is expected in 2027.
Instead of pursuing an independent device, Microsoft is now concentrating on collaborations with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to produce Xbox-branded handheld consoles. The first project under this new direction is known as “Project Kennan,” developed by Asus in partnership with Xbox.
The Benefits of Collaboration
This approach allows Microsoft to minimize risks by working with established companies like Asus, which have experience in creating PC gaming devices. This partnership also enables the integration of recognizable Xbox buttons into their designs. Recently leaked images from the U.S. FCC reveal that Project Kennan resembles an Asus ROG Ally but features distinct Xbox branding and controls.
The launch of Kennan is anticipated later this year, marking a significant step for Microsoft's entry into portable gaming through partnerships rather than direct competition.
Enhancing Windows 11 for Gaming
In addition to these partnerships, Microsoft aims to use this time wisely by enhancing Windows 11 before introducing any proprietary handheld devices. The company recognizes that SteamOS remains a popular choice among OEMs for PC gaming handhelds and wants to improve its own operating system's performance and appeal.
This year, Microsoft acknowledged some limitations within Windows 11's gaming capabilities and expressed a desire to merge the best features of both Xbox and Windows into one cohesive handheld experience. Project Kennan represents an initial move toward achieving this goal.
The Future of Microsoft's Handheld Plans
The timeline for when we might see more about these upcoming devices remains uncertain. Notably, major events like Computex and Microsoft Build recently passed without any announcements regarding new hardware or software developments related to portable consoles.
Ahead lies Microsoft's big event-the Xbox Games Showcase-scheduled for June 8th; however, such showcases typically do not feature significant updates on PC-related products or peripherals like handheld consoles. As fans eagerly await news about future projects, only time will reveal what lies ahead for Microsoft's ambitions in mobile gaming technology.
