Offworld Industries, a Vancouver-based game developer, has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a group of modders creating the “Project Reality” mod for Battlefield 2. Now, the team is working on a major cult-classic IP with their latest game, the 16-player co-op shooter Starship Troopers: Extermination, in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment.
The team behind Starship Troopers: Extermination is dedicated to listening to the community and incorporating their feedback into the game. They have set high expectations for the game and are constantly looking for ways to improve the player experience. One example of this commitment is the inclusion of a dedicated single-player campaign in response to fan requests.
To bring a more authentic Starship Troopers experience to the game, the team sought out Casper Van Dien to reprise his role as Johnny Rico. Van Dien, who played Johnny Rico in Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers, was thrilled to be involved in the project and praised Offworld for their passion and attention to detail in honoring the film.
In addition to the single-player campaign featuring an older Johnny Rico, Starship Troopers: Extermination offers a 16-player online experience that immerses players in the intense battles against hordes of bugs. The game captures the essence of the film, allowing players to experience the action and chaos in a way that was not possible before.
The team at Offworld hopes that their journey from modders to working on a beloved IP like Starship Troopers inspires other Canadian developers. They aim to create a company that is aspirational for young Canadians looking to pursue a career in the gaming industry.
Starship Troopers: Extermination is now available on Steam in early access, with the full version, including the Johnny Rico single-player content, set to launch on October 11 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game promises to deliver an immersive and thrilling experience for fans of the Starship Troopers franchise.
