Tile, a popular Bluetooth tracking company, has recently fallen victim to a data breach, compromising the personal information of its users. According to Life360, the owner of Tile, the leaked data includes names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and Tile IDs. However, sensitive information such as credit card numbers, account login credentials, or location data was not included in the breach.
Chris Hulls, the CEO of Life360, confirmed that the company was targeted in a criminal extortion attempt, leading to the unauthorized access incident. Despite this, Life360 has taken immediate steps to enhance its security measures and has informed law enforcement about the breach.
In addition to the personal data breach, internal tools at Tile were also hacked, giving cybercriminals the ability to process location data requests for law enforcement purposes. The hacker behind the breach claimed to have access to all information and demanded payment from Tile, although no response was received from the company.
Tiles, similar to Apple's AirTags, are compact tracking devices that help users locate lost items. Life360 acquired Tile in 2021, further integrating the tracking technology into its services.
This breach serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding personal information and implementing robust security measures to protect against cyber threats. Users of Tile are advised to monitor their accounts for any unusual activity and take necessary precautions to secure their data.
