Sony is reportedly working on bringing backwards compatibility for PS3 games to the PS5, according to industry insiders. Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb mentioned on a recent episode of Game Mess Mornings that Sony’s developers have been busy working on native PS3 backwards compatibility for a significant amount of time. Currently, the PS5 only supports certain PS3 titles through the PS Plus service’s game streaming feature.
This information was further backed up by Shpeshal_Nick on The XboxEra Podcast, where he stated that “select” PS3 titles would be playable on the PS5 through native backwards compatibility. This move would be in line with Xbox’s approach to backwards compatibility, where a number of beloved original Xbox and Xbox 360 games are playable on the Xbox Series X/S.
However, it is uncertain whether the PS3 games on the PS5 will receive any resolution or framerate enhancements, similar to some older games on Xbox consoles. Despite the speculation surrounding the launch, Grubb suggested that Sony may have initially planned to unveil PS3 backwards compatibility earlier this year, raising questions about the delay.
The complexity of the PS3’s ‘Cell’ architecture has long been a hindrance to achieving backwards compatibility for the console’s games. Games like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and the Resistance and Killzone series have been stuck on the PS3 due to these technical challenges. Nevertheless, it appears that Sony has managed to overcome these obstacles for a selection of games.
Rumors have been circulating about Sony potentially releasing a ‘PS5 Pro’ later this year, which could be when the PS3 backwards compatibility feature is officially announced. As for confirmed late 2024 releases, Sony will be launching titles such as Astro Bot and Lego Horizon Adventures.
Overall, the prospect of playing select PS3 games on the PS5 through native backwards compatibility is an exciting development for PlayStation fans. Sony’s efforts to bring these classic titles to a new generation of gamers could open up new possibilities for revisiting old favorites on the latest hardware.
