Ubisoft Toronto has officially announced its involvement in the development of the highly anticipated remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The game, which was initially being handled by Ubisoft Montreal, has seen a series of internal studio changes before Ubisoft Toronto stepped in to lend its expertise.
The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake was first unveiled at the 2020 Ubisoft Forward event and was originally conceptualized by Indian studios Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Pune. The game is set to be a faithful recreation of the 2003 classic action-adventure game that was released on multiple platforms. Actor Yuri Lowenthal is returning to voice the iconic character.
However, the announcement trailer for the remake received widespread criticism for its outdated graphics. As a result, the game's release was initially delayed from January 2021 to March 2021, and then further postponed to the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Ubisoft Montreal took over the development, leading to the cancellation and refunding of existing pre-orders. The studio then entered a new “conception phase” for the game.
As of now, there is no confirmed release date for the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. Ubisoft Toronto, in a recent Twitter post, highlighted its open job positions and invited creative artists, animators, and programmers to join the project. The studio is also working on a Splinter Cell remake, utilizing the Snowdrop engine, with no release date announced for that project either.
Overall, Ubisoft Toronto's involvement in the development of the Prince of Persia remake brings renewed hope for fans eagerly awaiting the updated version of this beloved classic game.
