Witcher 3 Remastered and Songs of the Past Launch Sept 29

CD Projekt Red Confirms September 29 Launch for The Witcher 3 Remastered and Songs of the Past Expansion

CD Projekt Red announced today that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered and its new expansion Songs of the Past will launch on September 29 2026 across PC PlayStation 5 Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement came during gamescom Opening Night Live where host Geoff Keighley revealed the release date alongside several player-focused surprises.

Quick Facts

  • Release date: September 29 2026
  • Platforms: PC PlayStation 5 Xbox Series Nintendo Switch 2
  • Expansion: Songs of the Past (paid)
  • Base upgrade: The Witcher 3 Remastered (free for existing owners)
  • Co-developers: Fool's Theory (Songs of the Past) Yigsoft (Remastered)
  • Battle.net partnership: Blizzard Entertainment with Diablo 4 crossover skin

Two Projects One Launch Window

The Polish studio is delivering two distinct products on the same day. The Witcher 3 Remastered upgrades the base game with visual improvements and quality of life updates while Songs of the Past adds a new story chapter. Both projects have been in development for several years with separate co-development partners. Fool's Theory handles Songs of the Past. The studio leadership includes veterans who worked on the original Witcher 3. Yigsoft manages the Remastered upgrade and brings prior experience working on The Witcher 3 technology.

Existing owners of The Witcher 3 on any platform will receive the Remastered upgrade at no cost. The studio confirmed this during the gamescom presentation. The free upgrade applies to the base game only. Songs of the Past is a separate paid expansion.

Free Expansions for Current Owners Starting Today

As an immediate bonus CD Projekt Red announced that all current owners of The Witcher 3 now have access to both Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for free. This applies to players who own the base game but never purchased the expansions. The gift unlocks automatically on each platform storefront. Geoff Keighley made the announcement on stage at gamescom Opening Night Live. This gives players who missed the original expansions a chance to experience the full story before the Remastered launch in September.

Battle.net Partnership Adds Diablo 4 Crossover

CD Projekt Red also confirmed a publishing partnership with Blizzard Entertainment. The Witcher 3 Remastered and Songs of the Past will be available on Battle.net. Players who purchase the expansion on Blizzard's platform will unlock a special Geralt-inspired cosmetic skin in Diablo 4. Further details about the crossover will be shared when CD Projekt Red attends BlizzCon in September. The partnership marks an unusual collaboration between two major RPG franchises.

Gamescom Hands On and REDstreams Schedule

Attendees at gamescom can play guided demos of both Songs of the Past and the Remastered upgrade in Hall 8.1 of the entertainment area. For players not attending the event CD Projekt Red will host REDstreams presentations throughout the show. These streams will air on YouTube and Twitch and each session will focus on specific areas of the expansion or the remaster. The studio has used REDstreams in previous years to provide deep dives into development decisions and gameplay systems.

What This Means for Witcher Fans

The simultaneous launch of a free remaster and a paid expansion is a generous move for a game that originally released in 2015. The Witcher 3 has sold over fifty million copies across all platforms and remains one of the most referenced RPGs in modern gaming. Adding Nintendo Switch 2 to the platform list signals CD Projekt Red's confidence in Nintendo's next hardware. The Blizzard partnership expands distribution beyond Steam GOG and console storefronts. For players the immediate gift of both expansions removes the last barrier to experiencing the complete Witcher 3 story before the new chapter arrives.

This announcement arrives alongside other Witcher universe developments. A separate free to play co-op Witcher game for PC and mobile was leaked earlier this year. Meanwhile Blood of Dawnwalker the next major RPG from CD Projekt Red shows its gameplay systems in a new trailer. The studio's other flagship Cyberpunk 2077 has crossed forty million sales as the Edgerunners anime drives renewed interest.
