Nintendo has finally revealed details about its much-anticipated Switch 2 console. The company kicked off its April 2 Direct presentation with a showcase of Mario Kart World and provided fans with a comprehensive look at the successor to the hugely popular Switch. The most exciting news? The Switch 2 will launch globally on June 5, 2025. While Nintendo hasn’t disclosed pricing for different regions, expect updates soon.
Hardware Upgrades and Design Changes
In terms of hardware, the Switch 2 features a design similar to the original model, but with some significant upgrades. You’ll find a 7.9-inch 1080p mini LCD screen that supports HDR and can run up to 120 frames per second. When docked, expect games to support 4K resolution at 60fps—a notable improvement over the original Switch.
The console also sports an adjustable U-shaped kickstand and an additional USB-C port on the top, alongside the standard port on the bottom. With 256GB of internal storage, the Switch 2 offers eight times the capacity of the original. However, users should note that only MicroSD Express cards are compatible for external storage; your existing Switch microSD cards won’t work.
Innovative Joy-Cons and New Features
Nintendo introduced magnetic Joy-Cons that replace the sliding rail system of the original. These new Joy-Cons come with larger trigger buttons and a mouse-like functionality. This means you can place the Joy-Con on a flat surface to scroll like a mouse—a feature that will enhance gameplay in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which is set to launch on both the Switch and Switch 2.
A new ‘C’ button on the right Joy-Con focuses on social features, including “GameChat.” This built-in mic allows you to chat with friends and family while gaming—something that was limited to the Switch Online mobile app previously. You can also share your game screen using the C button.
Enhancing Social Play and Camera Features
In addition to these features, Nintendo plans to release a standalone camera on the same day as the Switch 2 launch. This camera will enhance games like Super Mario Party Jamboree, offering unique features. While a Switch Online subscription will be necessary for GameChat, Nintendo will provide a free trial for Switch 2 owners until March 31, 2026. A new Pro controller will also join the lineup, featuring the C button and customizable triggers for a more tailored gaming experience.
It’s worth noting that Nintendo hasn’t commented on whether the new Joy-Cons will address the “drift” issues that affected the previous generation.
GameSharing and Support Titles
Lastly, Nintendo teased a new GameShare feature that lets one user share select games with up to three other systems. Supported titles include Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Super Mario Odyssey, and Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker.
