Nintendo Aims for 15 Million Switch 2 Sales in Year One

Nintendo has announced its goal to sell 15 million units of the new Switch 2 within its first year. This estimate was revealed during an investor call linked to their latest earnings report. The company aims to reach this target by March 2026, just shy of a year after the console is set to launch on June 5, 2025. Alongside hardware sales, Nintendo expects to sell around 45 million games for the Switch 2 during this timeframe.

To put this into perspective, the original Nintendo Switch is still one of the top-selling gaming consoles ever, with over 152 million units sold globally. In its first thirteen months on sale, it sold approximately 17.79 million units. The forecast for the Switch 2 at 15 million in ten months is ambitious but slightly lower than some analysts had predicted; estimates from sources like Bloomberg suggested initial sales could reach as high as 16.8 million.

One reason behind Nintendo's cautious outlook is the effect of U.S. tariffs from previous administrations that have raised production costs significantly. Although there has been no price increase announced for the Switch 2 itself yet, some accessories have already seen higher prices. President Shuntaro Furukawa indicated that if tariff issues worsen, they might need to rethink pricing strategies for their new console.

The situation in Canada highlights these price changes even more starkly. When it launched in Canada back in 2017, the original Switch was priced at $400 CAD-equivalent to about $500 today when adjusted for inflation. In contrast, consumers will pay $630 CAD for a new Switch 2 unit upon release; major titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World are expected to retail at $100 and $110 respectively-significantly higher than most current exclusive titles priced around $80.

This trend of rising costs isn't limited just to Nintendo products; other companies are also adjusting their nintendo-switch-2-games-set-to-exceed-100-in-canada/” title=”Are … … Games Set to Exceed … in Canada?”>prices due to similar pressures on hardware and software expenses. Xbox recently raised prices across its consoles and accessories worldwide while Sony increased PS5 prices in certain markets along with subscription fees for PlayStation Plus services.

Despite these challenges facing gamers today, Nintendo remains hopeful about early interest in the Switch 2 due largely to strong brand loyalty among fans and an exciting lineup of upcoming games planned for release alongside it.
