PlayStation Unveils New Gameplay for Ghost of Yōtei

On Thursday, PlayStation hosted its latest State of Play event, showcasing an exciting look at Sucker Punch's eagerly awaited Ghost of Yōtei. The presentation featured over 20 minutes of gameplay from this standalone sequel to the acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, designed specifically for the PS5.

You can watch the gameplay footage below:

Atsu's Journey in a Stunning Open World

Taking place centuries after the events in Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei centers on Atsu, a young rōnin who returns to her homeland seeking vengeance for her family's murder. Players will explore the expansive landscapes surrounding Mount Yōtei as they hunt down those responsible for Atsu's suffering.

A Fresh Take on Exploration and Combat Mechanics

The State of Play highlighted several new features that players can look forward to. One notable addition is a card-based system that helps track Atsu's investigation and available bounties. A spyglass allows players to mark points of interest, while the “Guiding Wind” mechanic from the original game returns, gently steering players toward their objectives without traditional waypoints.

A new camp feature also enhances gameplay by providing opportunities to unwind-players can enjoy music, cook meals, or interact with NPCs who offer quests and unique items. This adds depth and variety to exploration beyond combat.

Diverse Combat Options Await Players

Sucker Punch showcased an array of weapons during the presentation. Players can wield dual katanas or opt for larger weapons like the ōdachi blade and kusarigama sickle. A fresh combat mechanic allows players to disarm foes if they act quickly enough; however, there's a risk involved-Atsu might drop her weapon if she makes a mistake during battle. Additionally, hints were dropped about having a wolf companion join Atsu in combat scenarios.

Nostalgic Features with Modern Twists

The State of Play also touched on beloved features returning from previous titles. Fans will be pleased to see Photo Mode make its comeback alongside an Akira Kurosawa-inspired black-and-white mode. There are also modes influenced by director Takashi Miike's film 13 Assassins, which brings an up-close perspective during fights, as well as elements inspired by Shinichirō Watanabe's series Samurai Champloo, adding lo-fi beats into gameplay.

An Exciting Release Date Ahead!

Ghost of Yōtei wil be released on October 2, 2025-a date fans are eagerly anticipating! Sucker Punch has teased that there will be special edition merchandise available at launch too: a themed PS5 console along with matching DualSense controllers set to release simultaneously with the game itself.

The Future Looks Bright for PS5 Exclusives!

This title marks only the second major exclusive release for PS5 this year following last month's launch of Death Stranding 2: On The Beach . Meanwhile,< emMarathon , developed by Bungie-the creators behind Destiny-was initially scheduled for September but has been delayed indefinitely.

This project represents Sucker Punch's first title built entirely from scratch for PS5 hardware.
