If you haven’t heard about Cities Skylines yet, Cities Skylines is a new sim game released by Paradox Interactive and developed by Colossal Order. Sound familiar? Colossal Order developed Cities in Motion back in 2011. Yes, the transpo sim game. Now, it seems like they have made a huge leap forward and applied their skills from Cities in Motion (and some say, they even applied reviews from other city sim games) and created an awesome new city-building simulation game and dubbed it Cities Skylines.

Released in Steam last March 10, Cities Skylines is seeing record sales for the publisher and even versus other sim games in the market. In fact, Cities Skylines reached a whopping 250,000 I-must-have-it-take-my-money clicks on Steam within the first 24 hours of its release.

skyline3

The game is USD29.99 for the standard pack. The deluxe edition costs USD39.99 and for an additional USD10, you get five cool landmarks your citizens will like: the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Brandenburg Gate, the Statue of Liberty, and Grand Central Terminal. The deluxe edition also has additional soundtracks for zoning out and really tripping while building your city.

PC, Apple, and Linux users are all going to have a blast with this sim game with reasonable required specs like 6GB of RAM and just 4GB of space needed. The video card requirements are nothing outrageous. So if your computer already plays other recent 3D games, it’ll be able to play Cities Skylines as well.

skyline4

Now on to the nitty-gritties! The game visuals are fantastic. The buildings are smooth and realistic — in a cartoonish kind of way. It sound ironic but the graphic style works for the game. Zooming in and out from an individual house to a city does not cause any lag with the recommended graphics specifications. The visual appeal of the game is exciting as you get caught up with little details such as a random bison grazing on a citizen’s lawn.

In terms of sounds, the background music is pretty average but you can get 14 more tracks with the deluxe edition. The dashboard mouse click and building sound effects are also average but is satisfying enough for the feel of getting things done in the game.

skyline2

The interface is reminiscent of a popular sim game. Everything is visually simple: just icons such as a lighting bolt for electricity and a water droplet for — you guessed it — water! Pop-up windows appear once in a while to give you, the mayor, tips and also to announce game achievements. There is still a bit of a learning curve and depending on your OCD level, you will find yourself deleting a whole day’s urban development if your power lines aren’t lining up exactly. A sim game newbie will have a bit of a challenge with the Cities Skylines dashboard but it would take him or her only 10 minutes or so to figure it out. Easy peasy!

The gameplay of Cities Skylines is what all the fuss in the reviews is about. And when you get into the game, you will realize that at last, this is the game you wanted EA to deliver but never did (Hello, EA!). The game feels HUGE, giving the player the ability to make a million citizens happy. Everything is seamless with fully simulated population reacting to your decisions on electricity, water supply, garbage collection, city districts, and roads. Details like power source, airflow, and water flow are all integrated into the game for a more realistic feel in building an efficient city. To add to that already awesome fact, the gameplay can be further enhanced by the developer’s addition of a mod feature.

skyline1

Colossal Order has embraced the curious and creative gamer by opening Cities Skylines to those who have developed mods to the game via a full Steam Workshop Integration. Can anyone say, “Open all the spaces!?” Then get the “All Spaces Unlockable” mod. There’s also an essential mod — an Autosaver — that will save your work at a set regular interval. There are out of the box mods, too, such as unlimited money (which is the all-time favorite) and unlocking all buildings. (As a side note, the genius behind Colossal Order’s mod feature is game replayability and variety for the gamer.)

Cities Skylines is a must-buy and must-have if you are one of those gamers who have been patiently waiting for years for that perfect city simulation game that will satisfy your need for straight roads and perfectly symmetrical urban and suburban districts. It’s also good to know that Colossal Order is poised to give this game full support and maintenance for a long time, with plans of releasing regular patch updates and new episodes downloadable for a fee.

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is an action RPG developed by Square Enix. It is a remake of the previously Japan-only release title for the PSP with the same name (minus “HD”), but because of its popularity, the game was remade with upgraded graphics for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and was made available outside Japan as well in March 2015. The game is part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy subseries universe, along with other games such as Final Fantasy XIII and the upcoming Final Fantasy XV.

The game is a throwback for seasoned and longtime Final Fantasy players because of the many familiar and classic Final Fantasy elements that the game contains. Some of the monsters include flans, evil eyes, malboros, and even the cactuar. The game also has an open world map exploration reminiscent of the older games. The chocobo and ubiquitous moogle make their appearances as well.

fftype0__1

Clumsy camera angles can make combat quite confusing, but the game still stands out because of its exciting fast-paced and action-oriented gameplay, which is quite similar to Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Combat mainly involves attacking and dodging, but unlike other action RPGs, where combat simply requires you to press the same button again and again, combat in Type-0 HD never gets boring. The player has the option of including a whopping 12 characters in their 3-character team, each having his or her own weapon, skillset, and play style. When one character dies, which could happen a lot, the player can call in another character from the remaining 9 in reserve. Because of this, players can’t simply focus on just 3 characters and leave the rest underleveled. The variety of available combinations of characters can give the player quite a number of interesting team setups

Combat also contains specific-timed attacks, the “Break Sight” (critical damage) and the “Kill Sight” (instant kill), which prevents the normally cumbersome grinding and random encounters from really being a drag. The whole 3-man team can also use a high-damage Triad Maneuver, which can be done any number of times during missions. The Support Personal System, which is exclusive to the HD version, enables certain AI-controlled characters to replace regular party members when activated. Various kinds of equipment, magic skills, and summons, called Eidolons, are also available. Characters level up individually, which means a lot of grinding, but the player is assured never to really get bored; the combat always stays fresh. There are also tons of missions and an arena the players can challenge, which doesn’t really have to mean grinding as the only source of XP. Also, and this is something many regular Final Fantasy players look for, a fourth difficulty level was added in the HD version. This provides players with the option of a more challenging mode of gameplay, which is personally more fun than the easier modes.

fftype0__2

Players can get quite confused about the plot early on, however; the game just throws them in too quickly. However, this is soon remedied as the game progresses, as a complex and interesting plot is opened up to the players. The game notably stands out from other Final Fantasy games because of its more violent and dark story. There is actually a lot of blood and killing in the game, which is something that players do not really take notice of in other Final Fantasy games.

Death and loss is also a prominent theme in the game, which is apt, considering the main focus of the plot is war. The ending of the game, which will not be spoiled here, is quite shocking, but also a little unsatisfying, so the game gives the players the option of a second playthrough. This gives the game a quite high replay value, as the second playthrough provides hidden and unexplored plot elements that further shed light on the game’s story. There is also an alternate ending, wholly different from the first, and it becomes interesting once players discover there were actually bigger forces at work throughout the story.

fftype0__3

The graphics of the HD version are visually impressive, especially the CGI cutscenes, a far cry from the original PSP version. The Final Fantasy series has always been known for its stunning cutscenes, and this game is no exception. With each Final Fantasy universe being unique, Type-0 HD gives players the immersive experience of the beauty of this particular world through crisp colors. Since the setting of the game is war, however, many of the locations can be dark, which seem even gloomier because of the game’s graphics. The game’s soundtrack ties in well with the overall theme as well. The soundtracks are full of drums and instrumentals that make the player feel the charge of a battle, or the mournfulness that follows one.

Kritika: The White Knights players can now unleash the skills of a new character called the Demon Blade, available in today’s Version 2.12 update. The expert swordsman showcases his abilities through a variety of attacks, such as:

    • Storm Attack: Barrel through the battlefield like a storm and strike the enemy five times.
    • Rapid Triple Slash: Flash forward to slice through enemies with three consecutive slashes.
    • Speed Strike: Charge at the enemies with a burst of speed and split them open with a powerful slash.
    • Skysplit: Attack the enemy with an initial strike, then blaze forward to strike again. Thrust enemies into the air, split them open with expert sword strokes, and land a final blow while descending.
    • Demon X: Unsheathe the demonic blade, slash an “X” through the enemy, and stun all enemies within the attack zone.

Consumed by his desire to become an invincible warrior, the Demon Blade chose a powerful cursed sword as his weapon. With this sword, he inflicts instant damage on the battlefield, but is now at risk of becoming completely possessed by sword’s evil power.

In addition to introducing the Demon Blade, the update has also increased the stats of the Berserker and Dark Valkyrie characters, resulting in balance between all six character classes: Berserker, Cat Acrobat, Shadow Mage, Dark Valkyrie, Crimson Assassin, and Demon Blade.

Be careful, though, because sustaining hits from the enemies can cause a “Costume Break”, which will compromise their outfits and leave them vulnerable to more damage!
Lethal harmonies! An idol group combines their talents to create beautiful harmonies, and with the “Harmonics” system, you can sing your enemies right into their graves! Create deadly super chains of attacks, utilizing each idol’s skill in the right order to keep the pain coming –it’ll be music to your ears!
Dance or die! Create performances for your idols and share them with the PlayStation®4 Share function! You can build each routine, move by move, and even use the PlayStation®4 Camera to project yourself into the performance, as well as the Move controller to add special effects! The better your shows, the more moves you’ll be able to pass onto your idols!
